6.1-magnitude quake strikes off central Indonesia, no tsunami alert issued

An earthquake measuring at 6.1 magnitude rattled Nusa Tenggara province in central Indonesia on Sunday, causing no tsunami warning, the country's meteorology and geophysics agency said.

The quake struck at 4:54 a.m. Jakarta time Sunday with the epicenter at 148 km northeast Alor of the province and the depth at 573 km under sea bed, said Abdul Rosyid, an official of the meteorology and geophysics agency.

"This quake did not have a potential of tsunami, so that we did not issue tsunami alert," the official told Xinhua via phone.

He said the jolts were very weak and so far there has been no reports that the tremors were felt.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it sits on a vulnerable quake-impacted zone called the Pacific Ring of Fire.
