Los Angeles (People's Daily) - According to officials at the Chinese embassy in Mexico, the number of Chinese nationals who have been stopped and interrogated upon arrival at Mexico City International Airport has increased. Meanwhile, reports have emerged of Mexican immigration officers asking for "tips" from Chinese travellers during their arrival verification process.

As Mexico borders the US, immigration policies are stringent. Mexican authorities said it would improve workflow and provide greater convenience to Chinese visitors. At the same time, it will strengthen supervisory efforts on immigration officers and conduct investigations into alleged bribery incidents.

“We hope Chinese citizens report bribery on time and assist Mexico in enforcing the law,” said by Mexican authorities.

The Chinese embassy in Mexico reminded Chinese travellers that according to international law, countries have the right to refuse entry, regardless of visa status, and can do so without reason.

The Chinese embassy suggested that all Chinese who will travel to or through Mexico, they should make adequate preparations before arriving. Chinese travellers should carefully study Mexico’s entry and exit requirements, be able to prepare related materials upon request, answer questions from Mexican immigration officers upon entry verification, and complete necessary arrival questionnaires.

Mexican authorities stated that if entering and leaving the border is rejected, it is recommended to remain calm and avoid unruly behaviour, strengthen communication efforts, and truthfully explain the situation to provide sufficient material for release. If a Mexican immigration officer asks for money, do not oblige the request and record the incident and then promptly report it. In cases of emergency, unjust treatment or disputes, contact Mexican authorities, collect and keep any evidence for future settlements through legal channels.

"We will continue to pay close attention to such cases and provide necessary assistance to Chinese nationals in need of help," stated by Mexican authorities.
